Audrey Mislan

Audrey Yow Mislan was born and reared in the small community of Ramseur, North Carolina.  She grew up in a family surrounded by a mother and grandmother who practiced traditional arts and crafts, such as quilting, embroidery, crocheting, and knitting and a father that worked as an electronic technician. As a child, she explored a variety of arts and crafts and was fascinated by patterns found in circuit boards, quilts, needlework, plants, and rocks and minerals.  Her parents provided art materials, books, and other supplies to fuel her creative energies.  She continued to expand her knowledge through continuing education classes.

In the early nineties, Audrey underwent two hand surgeries.  These surgeries forced her to reconsider career options.  Audrey could no longer continue to work in the manufacturing industry.  She enrolled in college and began her formal study of art. This study included focused instruction on painting, printmaking, and art education. The journey has continued through to the present day, which includes the exploration of painting through an MFA.  As a life-long learner, she continues to explore new techniques and media.

Her current focuses are mixed media collage pieces, paintings, digital photography and illustration, altered art, handmade books, art journals, beadwork, and jewelry.  The collage pieces and handmade books combine unique papers and imagery with fascinating fibers, beaded tapestries, and embellishments.  Inspiration comes from nature, ethnic cultures, mythology, earth-based religions and the paranormal.  Hallmarks for her work include unique color combinations, fantasy and gothic imagery, and varied patterns and textures.  She has won several awards for her artwork in national competitions and local shows.  Audrey currently resides in central Florida with several cats.
